SCHEDULING
PLEASE NOTE:
The Traditional Herbalist program is currently being revised. Some of our courses are being converted to an online distance learning format. The classroom versions of these courses will no longer be available. These include general interest, Holistic Herbal Studies, and Traditional Herbalist courses, but not Herbal Field Studies field workshops, or The Spirit of Herbs workshops.
The new online versions of the courses that were formerly offered as
in-class courses will be identical to the classroom versions. They will consist of digital audio files of the in-class lectures
which students will be able to stream from our online courses site, along with the
accompanying handouts as PDF files. Quizzes and exams will also be online. Students will be able to ask questions and communicate with other students
enrolled in a course via an online forum.
Most of the online courses will be available as general interest courses.
Enrolment will be open to anyone as long as they have completed the appropriate
prerequisites for the course, where applicable. It will no longer be necessary
to officially enroll in the Traditional Herbalist program until completion of the
online courses.
Once the online versions of these courses are available, it will be possible to register for them at any time.
Information on the projected times when the online courses will become available can be found below. Please check back periodically for updates.
For more information please also visit the Program and Curriculum, Current Courses and Registration sections of our website.
General
Scheduling Information
To ensure the quality of the educational experience of
students, there is a limit to the number of students
that can register for Herbal Field Studies and The Spirit of Herbs. As a result,
it is very important that prospective students register early to ensure
that they will be able to attend the course or program of their choice.
Enrollment can vary a fair bit from year to year. Some years the number
of registrations exceeds the upper limit allowable. When this occurs,
students are admitted on a first-come-first-served basis with priority going to students who wish to enroll in the Traditional Herbalist program. Limits on the number of students who may enroll in online courses, if any, have yet to be determined. Once a course is converted to an online format, students may enroll in it at any time as long as they have completed the appropriate prerequisite(s).

Traditional Herbalist Schedule,
General Information
Much of the science portion of the curriculum
of the Traditional Herbalist program consists of courses that are available
at George Brown
College (for more details, see the
specific information below). Alternatives to most of these courses are available in an online distance learning format from various colleges through Ontario Learn. Students
must enroll in these courses directly with George Brown College or through Ontario Learn. It
is the students' responsibility to ensure that they enroll in the appropriate
courses to meet the requirements of the Traditional Herbalist program.
They will also be required to provide transcripts indicating their attendance
at these courses and their final grades.
Four of the George Brown courses (Anatomy and Physiology I & II,
Pathology and Therapeutics I & II) are only offered as part of the part-time
Practical Nursing program. Students of the Traditional Herbalist program
are allowed to enroll in these courses based on an agreement with the
Nursing program at George Brown College. In order to enroll in Anatomy
and Physiology I, students must contact the director of the part-time
Practical Nursing program at George Brown and indicate that you are
a student of the Traditional Herbalist program at Living Earth School
of Herbalism. They will probably require an official letter from Living
Earth (which we will provide) as proof that you are a Living Earth student.
In some years George Brown College does not offer the Practical Nursing program as a part-time program. Living Earth students are not eligible to enroll in these courses in the full-time Practical Nursing program. Therefore the alternative online distance learning courses offered through Ontario Learn are the only options available at this time unless students are able to find equivalent courses at other colleges in their area.
Students who live outside the Toronto area may apply to have courses
from other community colleges and universities accepted as a substitution
for any of the George Brown courses that are required for the Traditional
Herbalist program. In order to be accepted as a substitution, the course
must have a similar curriculum and be of a depth and length that is
at least that of the George Brown course.
Acceptance of any courses as equivalents to courses in Level 1b or 2b of the Traditional Herbalist program requires the approval of the program director.
It is not possible for Living
Earth to research all of the courses that might be acceptable substitutions
from the many educational institutions outside of the Toronto area.
It is the responsibility of the student to research courses and provide
the information to Living Earth for approval. For students who are comfortable with distance learning, there are also online course options available from Ontario Learn that are suitable substitutions for most of the George Brown courses.
Students may take courses in the Traditional Herbalist program at their own pace as long as they have successfully completed any prerequisites that are required, however, they may only enroll in one of the online courses offered by Living Earth School at a time. They may also take one of the Ontario Learn or equivalent courses at the same time. It is recommended that students who wish to complete the program at a faster pace devote more time to the courses in which they are enrolled rather than by taking more than two courses at the same time.
Traditional
Herbalist, Level 1a Schedule 2012
All of the courses in level 1a of the Traditional Herbalist program are being converted to an online distance learning format except the Herbal Field Studies field workshops, which
are scheduled every year on seven Saturdays from April to October, and The Spirit of
Herbs which is scheduled for six days running from Sunday to Friday in the summer in alternating years.
Although The Spirit of Herbs is a Level 1a course, this workshop may
be taken at any time before beginning Level 2a of the program.
Healing With Herbs
The online version of this course is now available. Students may register at any time.
Prerequisite: None.
Herbal Therapeutics & Materia Medica
This course is currently being converted to an online distance learning format. It is a very long course and is divided into three distinct parts. Students enrol in and complete each part separately. The date when this course will become available online will be confirmed in February. The classroom version of this course will no longer be available.

Complementary Herbal Therapies
This course is currently being converted to an online distance learning format. It is estimated that the online version of the course will be available in September 2012. The date when this course will become available online will be confirmed in June. The classroom version of this course will no longer be available.
Prerequisite: Healing With Herbs.
Herbal Materia Medica

Students must complete the introductory class as a prerequisite for attendance of any of the field workshops. For distance learning students enrolled in the Traditional Herbalist program who do not live in southern Ontario, they will be offered as an extension to the intensive workshops in the advanced (post online) version of the program.

The dates of the remaining workshops and the final exam TBA in February.
Prerequisite: None.
The Spirit of Herbs**
This workshop will continue to run as it has in the past.
This workshop is not scheduled in 2012.
Prerequisite: None.
(*) In addition to the five Herbal Field Studies field workshops that must be attended in order to fulfill the requirements of this course, Traditional Herbalist students are required to attend an additional five field workshops in order to meet the academic requirements of the program (i.e. the academic requirements of the Traditional Herbalist program requires students to attend a total of ten Herbal Field Studies field workshops, even though only five field workshops need to be attended to meet the requirements of the course). This must include all seven of regularly scheduled Herbal Field Studies workshops and three additional repeats. Students are expected to attend all ten Herbal Field Studies workshops in the first two years that they are enrolled in the program.

on the scheduling of The Spirit of Herbs:
