SCHEDULING
The following sections include
PDF course and program schedules that can be viewed or downloaded with
Adobe Acrobat
Reader .
General
Scheduling Information
To ensure the quality of the educational experience of
students, there is a maximum and minimum limit to the number of students
that can register for Healing With Herbs and the Holistic Herbal Studies
and Traditional Herbalist programs in the fall of each year. As a result,
it is very important that prospective students register early to ensure
that they will be able to attend the course or program of their choice.
Enrollment can vary a fair bit from year to year. Some years the number
of registrations exceeds the upper limit allowable. When this occurs,
students are admitted on a first-come-first-served basis with priority going to students who wish to enroll in the Traditional Herbalist program.
General Interest and Holistic
Herbal Studies Courses
Schedule 2010/2011
With the exception of Herbal Field Studies and The Spirit

program either in September with Healing With Herbs, or in April with
Herbal Field Studies. The latter course is scheduled yearly. The remainder of the courses are scheduled in alternating years. For information on the current year please see below.
For
more information on the Holistic Herbal Studies program, please see
the Program

Traditional Herbalist Schedule,
General Information
Much of the science portion of the curriculum
of the Traditional Herbalist program consists of courses that are available
at George Brown
College (for more details, see the
specific information below). Alternatives to most of these courses are available in an online distance format from various colleges through Ontario Learn. Students
must enroll in these courses directly with George Brown College or through Ontario Learn. It
is the students' responsibility to ensure that they enroll in the appropriate
courses to meet the requirements of the Traditional Herbalist program.
They will also be required to provide transcripts indicating their attendance
at these courses and their final grades.
Four of the George Brown courses (Anatomy and Physiology I & II,
Pathology and Therapeutics I & II) are only offered as part of the part-time
Practical Nursing program. Students of the Traditional Herbalist program
are allowed to enroll in these courses based on an agreement with the
Nursing program at George Brown College. In order to enroll in Anatomy
and Physiology I, students must contact the director of the part-time
Practical Nursing program at George Brown and indicate that you are
a student of the Traditional Herbalist program at Living Earth School
of Herbalism. They will probably require an official letter from Living
Earth (which we will provide) as proof that you are a Living Earth student.
In the 2010/2011 school year, George Brown College is not offering the Practical Nursing program as a part-time program. Living Earth students are not eligible to enroll in these courses in the full-time Practical Nursing program. Therefore the alternative online distance learning courses offered through Ontario Learn are the only options available at this time unless students are able to find equivalent courses at other colleges in their area.
Students who live outside the Toronto area may apply to have courses
from other community colleges and universities accepted as a substitution
for any of the George Brown courses that are required for the Traditional
Herbalist program. In order to be accepted as a substitution, the course
must have a similar curriculum and be of a depth and length that is
at least that of the George Brown course.
Acceptance of any courses as equivalents to courses in Level 1b or 2b of the Traditional Herbalist program requires the approval of the program director.
It is not possible for Living
Earth to research all of the courses that might be acceptable substitutions
from the many educational institutions outside of the Toronto area.
It is the responsibility of the student to research courses and provide
the information to Living Earth for approval. For students who are comfortable with distance learning, there are also online course options available from Ontario Learn that are suitable substitutions for most of the George Brown courses.
Full-time
Students
Students who enroll full-time
in the Traditional Herbalist program take Level 1a courses at Living
Earth and Level 1b courses at George Brown College in their first year,
Level 2a courses at Living Earth and Level 2b courses at George Brown
in their second year, and Level 3 courses (including Supervised Clinic)
at Living Earth in their third year. Full-time students complete the
Traditional herbalist program in approximately 3.5 years.
Part-time Students
Students who wish to enroll part-time
in the Traditional Herbalist program have two options:
Part-time
Option 1*
Students take Level 1a courses
at Living Earth in their first year, Level 1b courses at George Brown
College and/or through Ontario Learn in their second year, Level 2a courses at Living Earth in their
third year, Level 2b courses at George Brown and/or through Ontario Learn in their fourth year, and
Level 3 courses (including Supervised Clinic) at Living Earth in their
fifth year. Part-time students complete the Traditional herbalist program
in approximately 5.5 years.
Part-time
Option 2*
Students take Level 1b courses
at George Brown College and/or through Ontario Learn in their first year, Level 1a courses at Living
Earth in their second year, Level 2b courses at George Brown and/or through Ontario Learn in their
third year, Level 2a courses at Living Earth in their fourth year, and
Level 3 courses (including Supervised Clinic) at Living Earth in their
fifth year. Part-time students complete the Traditional herbalist program
in approximately 5.5 years.
*Note on part-time scheduling: The
above part-time scheduling options are only suggestions. Students may
take any combination of Living Earth and George Brown or Ontario Learn courses in any
year that they are enrolled according to their individual needs as long
as they ensure that they take the appropriate prerequisites for the
courses that they wish to attend.
Students who decide to begin taking one or more Level
1b courses at George Brown College or through Ontario Learn before taking any of the Level 1a
courses at Living Earth are required to enroll in the Traditional
Herbalist program to ensure their acceptance into the program before
enrolling in any of the George Brown or Ontario Learn courses. Having completed and passed
any of the George Brown or Ontario Learn courses does not guarantee your acceptance into
the Traditional Herbalist program.
Changing Course Load
Students may change their course
load from full-time to part-time or from part-time to full-time according to their individual needs.
Traditional
Herbalist, Level 1a Schedule 2010/2011
Weekly courses are scheduled on Wednesdays from 10:00 am
to 5:00 pm from September to June in alternating years. In addition, Herbal Field Studies
is scheduled every year on seven Saturdays from April to October. The Spirit of
Herbs is scheduled for six days running from Sunday to Friday in July on alternating years.
Although The Spirit of Herbs is a Level 1a course, this workshop may
be taken at any time before beginning Level 2a of the program. As a
result, full-time students are required to take this workshop before
beginning the second year of their program (i.e. they must take it at
the beginning or end of their first year of studies).
Students who wish to enroll in the Traditional Herbalist program in years when the weekly Level 1a courses are not scheduled can begin with the Level 1b courses. They may also attend Herbal Field Studies, which is scheduled every year, and The Spirit of Herbs in years when it is scheduled. Students who wish to enroll in the Level 1b courses at George Brown College and/or through Ontario Learn are required to first register in the Traditional Herbalist program to ensure your acceptance into the program, as the successful completion of any of the George Brown or Ontario Learn courses does not guarantee your acceptance into the Traditional Herbalist program.
Note: The end of weekly classes on June 1st can not be guaranteed. If any classes need to be cancelled due to weather or for any other reason, the weekly class schedule will end later in June. Classes could end as late as June 29th.
